Oppos, talk to me about Porsche 987s. I’ve noticed that they are 100% in 3rd car territory I can afford. A lot near me has one (and 3 BMW E36/7 s) I’m thinking about visiting.

Few of my friends in Hong Kong has them , one got it used, he was originally looking at E46 Cabrios but somehow ended up with the Boxster. His had the IMS bearing done and seems generally reliable aside from his occasional complain about how Liqui-Moly is so expensive there . But he wasn’t drive it much since he was living next to where he was working.

I don’t believe 987s had the massive ims issues like 986s did

The only things to look out for are the clutch and the IMS bearing.

The stock clutch is weak and will burn out if driven hard and tracked.

The IMS bearing is pretty well known, but what people often dont consider is that the 2006 to 2008 IMS replacement requires engine di sas sembly and is more expensive to replace as a result. I assume the ones that are least expensive fall within this year range. I’d find one with the IMS done and documented or investigate into the cost of having a shop do it on these later cars.

The later 9A1's are good engines, but they are prone to carbon deposits from the DI setup. They also typically cost more than the early 987's.

The first gen 987s do share the same engine and IMS problems the 996 and early 997s had; to what degree and frequency, couldn’t tell ya. The potential is there for all watercooled engines from 1997-2008.

They are a bargain. I used to know a guy that had a 987 Boxster with over 200k miles on it. He treated it like a Camry, was his only car and he washed it maybe once a year. Zero fucks given. It was black and I always thought he was trying to mimic David Dochovny in Californication.

In the future, the next Porsche I want is a 981 Cayman. Can’t wait for those to one day get to $35-40k range one day. 987s are great cars (better base sport cars than the equivalent 997) , but the 981s are the peak.

No one can ever mimic Hank Moody. And no one should even try unless they have a 964.

Plenty of them have been below $40k for a while. Even some higher mileage S models.

Well, it’s  in the middle. If you find one with the engine behind the wheels, its a 997.

If you aren’t prepared to buy it, don’t test drive it... You won’t be able to live without it after. Last year I got a ride in a 987 S at autocross and it put a serious WANT in my brain. 9 months later, and even with looking at and driving 7 other cars, I have a 981 S . In my comparison it barely made sense on paper, but I after I test drove a few I was hooked. It's an amazing DD and I had the best time ever at autocross last month. Good luck!

This is pretty much what my wife said, after crossing her arms and reminding me of the kids’ 529s.

Very happy owner of an 08S. Second owner, bought with 24k miles. Overpaid but worth it with known provenance. Bought just over 3 years ago and other than yearly oil change and brake fluid flush for random track day have had no issues. IMS is way overblown especially with later year 987’s. Buy the best one you can find/afford and enjoy with no regrets!
